Is It Dementia, or is It a Seizure?

You are noticing changes that do not make sense. The doctor might call it “progression,” but you see a pattern. This guide covers the four most common ways these hidden events appear, based on the Dementia Seizure Spectrumâ„¢ (DSS).

  1. Changes in Awareness What it looks like: Your loved one suddenly stops eating, talking, or moving. Their eyes may be open, but they look “glassy” or stare through you. If you touch their arm or say their name, they do not react. They are “offline” for 30 to 90 seconds, then slowly return to normal.
  2. Changes in Movement What it looks like: You see a rhythmic action that repeats over and over. It looks like a habit, but they cannot stop it. This often appears as lip smacking, chewing motions, rapid blinking, or picking at clothes.
  3. Changes in Behavior What it looks like: A “light switch” effect. One minute they are calm; the next second they are terrified, confused, or aggressive without any clear trigger. Just as quickly, the mood vanishes, and they are left exhausted.
  4. Recognizable Seizures What it looks like: The more obvious physical signs that clearly look medical. This includes generalized stiffening, shaking (convulsions), or a sudden loss of muscle tone where they drop or slump over.

Need to See It to Believe It?

Reading the descriptions above is the first step. Seeing real examples is the breakthrough.

But finding clear videos of these specific dementia-related symptoms online is difficult and frustrating.

Inside the SeizureSafe Academy, we have done the research for you. We have curated a collection of the clearest clinical examples available so you can compare what you are seeing at home with confirmed cases.

We give you the evidence you need to turn “I think something is wrong” into “Here is the data.”
